Rendering Three-dimensional Models of Vascular Trees Using Java 3D

In collaboration with the Department of Organismic Biology existing and running software (M3, written in Java) for the analysis of electron microscopy images has been extended. The main biological application of the software system is the measurement of vascular trees, where diameters and branching angles of the vessels are of particular interest. In this project software for rendering vascular trees, which are specified interactively by the user to extract the model data, has been designed and implemented. Basically, the vessels are modelled by conical frusta with transition elements yielding smooth bifurcations, whose appearance is further improved by texture and light effects provided by the Java 3D packages.
